James is a Visiting Professor of External Engagement at Aston University. His research interests include obesity, diabetes, exercise physiology, ageing, and breast cancer. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, and his work has been funded by the UK Research Councils, charities, and the European Union. He was previously a Board member for the British Society for Research on Ageing and the World Congress on Exercise Medicine.
